The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs will become members of an elite club when they square off against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 on Sunday. Kansas City (14-6) is the third team in NFL history that will be appearing in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in a five-year span, joining Buffalo (1990-93) and New England (2014-18). The Chiefs defeated San Francisco in Super Bowl 54, lost to Tampa Bay the following year and edged Philadelphia 38-35 last season. The 49ers (14-5) are making their eighth Super Bowl appearance, which ties with Pittsburgh and Dallas for second-most behind the Patriots (11).
Kickoff for Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+. San Francisco is a two-point favorite in the latest 49ers vs. Chiefs odds, per SportsLine consensus, and the over/under for total points scored is 47.5. Why the 49ers can cover
When San Francisco’s big three on offense are healthy, the team is nearly unbeatable. Including the postseason, the 49ers own a 15-1 record since Brock Purdy’s first start when the quarterback, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel all play the entire game. They have scored an average of 32.8 points in those contests and have outscored their opponents by 15.7 per game.
McCaffrey and Samuel both are dual threats, with the former recording an NFL-leading 1,459 yards rushing and 564 receiving during the regular season while the latter racked up 225 and 892, respectively. McCaffrey shared the league lead in total touchdowns with Miami’s Raheem Mostert with 21 as he ran for 14 scores and was tied for first on the 49ers with seven TD receptions. The 27-year-old hasn’t had any difficulty finding the end zone this postseason either, rushing for a pair of touchdowns in both of San Francisco’s first two games. See which team to back here.
Why the Chiefs can cover
Patrick Mahomes has an amazing postseason record, leading Kansas City to victory in 14 of his 17 career games. The two-time Super Bowl MVP also has had tremendous success at Allegiant Stadium as he has completed 73.5% of his attempts with 10 touchdown passes and just one interception while going 4-0 there when facing the Las Vegas Raiders. Veteran tight end Travis Kelce remains Mahomes’ top target, but rookie wideout Rashee Rice has become a key member of the Chiefs’ aerial attack this postseason.
Rice had a superb playoff debut, hauling in eight passes for 130 yards and a TD against Miami in the wild-card round. The 23-year-old from SMU, who was selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has 223 receiving yards thus far this postseason – the fourth-most by a rookie. Rice will need a huge performance to overtake Ja’Marr Chase for the record (368 yards in 2021) but likely will move past Austin Collie (241 in 2009) and Torry Holt (242 in 1999) for second place.
