The Los Angeles Chargers will try to avoid being eliminated from playoff contention when they host the Buffalo Bills in a Week 16 NFL game on Saturday at SoFi Stadium. After losing five of its last six games, Los Angeles (5-9) has sunk to the bottom of the NFC West standings, prompting the firing of head coach Brandon Staley last week. The Chargers would be eliminated from postseason contention with a loss on Sunday. Even if they win, they would be eliminated by a Jaguars victory or by a combination of other teams winning in Week 16. Meanwhile, the Bills (8-6) are in a dogfight for one of the three wild card spots in the AFC.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Buffalo is a 12-point favorite in the latest Bills vs. Chargers odds while the over/under for total points scored is 44.5. Why the Bills can cover

Buffalo’s James Cook has been one of the best running backs in the league this season. The second-year back from Georgia ranks second in the NFL in rushing yards (968), behind only Christian McCaffrey. Cook is coming off his best-ever game, rushing for a career-high 179 yards and one touchdown in the 31-10 blowout of the Cowboys.

Cook and the rest of the offense will face a Los Angeles defense that has struggled all season. The Chargers give up 375.3 total yards per game this year; just three teams allow more. They also concede 5.6 yards per play, which ranks 27th in the league.ย See which team to pick here.

Why the Chargers can cover

Los Angeles has dominated the head-to-head series against Buffalo recently. The Chargers have won four of the last five meetings against the Bills played anywhere and 11 of the last 13, including the last six straight, played at home. Buffalo hasn’t won on the road against the Chargers since 1981

In addition, Los Angeles is catching a potentially vulnerable Bills team on Saturday. Buffalo is coming off a three-game gauntlet with games against the Eagles, Chiefs and Cowboys. The Bills wouldn’t be the first team to not be completely focused mentally after a three-game stretch like that.ย See which team to pick here.
