The Chicago Bears added to their offensive depth by poaching a member of the Green Bay Packers.
There was a time when the Green Bay Packers used to take players from the Chicago Bears and have fun doing so. It looks like the tables may have turned.
On Thursday, the Bears inked a one-year deal with former Green Bay tight end Robert Tonyan. Itβs not a flashy move, but it does help Justin Fields.
Itβs not like Tonyan is Travis Kelce. Letβs make that 100 percent clear. In five seasons, Tonyan has barely over 1,300 yards receiving. But he does have 16 touchdowns, which means he likes to score, and thatβs just what Chicago needs at this point. Plus, they have no choice but to give Fields some help to see what he can be.
Robert Tonyan provides experience to the Chicago Bearsβ passing game and helps Justin Fields.
At this point, it seems as if the Bears are merely looking at the second or third wave of free agency to find depth for their roster, knowing the draft will also play a prominent role in shaping this team. The Robert Tonyan signing is a prime example of it.
With signings like Nate Davis and Tremaine Edmunds and the trade for DJ Moore, Chicago already made their presence known in the first wave. Still, general manager Ryan Poles made it very clear that he wants to build his team through the draft and is willing to trade down in the draft multiple times to get picks not only in 2023 but in 2024 as well.
Robert Tonyan will not have a breakout season, but donβt think he wonβt be able to provide input on Green Bay, at least while also giving Fields another potential option to throw the football to in case Cole Kmet finds himself covered heavily by opposing defenders. Itβs a move that only has rewards.
