The WNBA is adding the Golden State Valkyries as an expansion team for this upcoming season. The league is also adding teams in Portland and Toronto in 2026. It may not be much longer before the WNBA expands again.
Cleveland is in line to be awarded the 16th franchise in the league. The expectation is that team would begin play with the 2028 season.
The Cleveland franchise is reportedly bidding a league-record $250 million for the franchise. They’d be branded as the Cleveland Rockers, which was an original WNBA franchise before folding in 2003.
Houston and Philadelphia are also considered likely contenders for WNBA franchises. 13 different cities had expressed interest in adding an expansion team.
