In the week leading up to the Super Bowl, I always rank the 46 starters — no specialists, but both nickel corners — to try and get a gauge on how the game might be played out. Is one team that much better than the other as it relates to talent?
On paper, the Eagles have the more-talented roster, but from a top-end evaluation it’s pretty close.
Of the top 10 players in the game, based on my rankings, the Eagles have six players and the Chiefs have four. Of the top 20 players, the Eagles have 11 and the Chiefs have nine.
The Chiefs do have more in the bottom 10 with seven of their players to three for the Eagles.
The top player in the game goes without saying. It’s Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the man mostly responsible for the Chiefs’ three Super Bowl victories. As he readies to try and three-peat, and make a claim as the GOAT quarterback, he sits atop my list.
He is just ahead of Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who has carried the team to the Super Bowl with his big-play runs and the ability to roll up big numbers. Barkley comes in 12 spots ahead of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is at No. 14.
The talent edge is to the Eagles, but they don’t have Mahomes, who was know has been the deciding factor most of the time in the postseason.
So dive in and look around and gripe and moan about where some of your favorites are ranked. This is how I see it, which, in my world, is all that matters.
