Adam Silver: NBA Would Love Franchise In Mexico City, But It’s Many Years Off

NBA commissioner Adam Silver was in Mexico City for the NBA’s annual Mexico City Game. Ahead of the Miami Heat vs Washington Wizards matchup, Silver spoke about NBA expansion and the chance that will include a Mexico City franchise.

“Personally, I would love to have a team” in Mexico City is what Silver said during his press conference. After, in a one-on-one with The Athletic, the NBA commissioner said that expanding to Mexico City is a challenge and not happening anytime soon.

“Being direct, it’s highly unlikely Mexico City would jump above U.S. cities that are currently under consideration,” Silver said. “But at the same time, once we move into expansion mode and start looking at all the considerations that go with expansion, I think that would then allow us to have more of a template to understand whether a city like Mexico City would be suitable.”

Silver said that many cities have approached the NBA about expansion, but until recently, the NBA wasn’t considering adding new franchises. Now that the league is studying expansion, adding a franchise in Mexico City is “many years off”.

Silver also added that his preference is that the NBA adds two new teams when it does expand, as opposed to only adding one, “because then we might have to do some adjustments in the conferences, (and) I think it makes sense to have two conferences of 16 teams if we were to do it.”
