Luol Deng Funds the South Sudan National Team Out of His Own Pocket

South Sudan is living the dream of playing in the Olympics thanks to Luol Deng. Without his support, achieving the dream of participating in the Olympic Games would not have been possible.

Since leading the South Sudan Basketball Federation (2019), Deng has put his finances at the disposal of the national team. It was a way to allow a very young program to start developing. In a short time, historic results have already been achieved: last year the FIBA World Cup, this year the Olympics, and the first-ever victory against Puerto Rico in the opening match in Paris.

Luol (Deng) has been funding this project out of his own pocket for 4 years. Gyms, hotels, plane tickets: he pays for everything. We wouldn’t have been able to put all this together without him

Royal Ivey

Thanks to the financial support of the former Chicago Bulls player, South Sudan (which will face Team USA tomorrow night at 9 PM) managed to prepare for the Olympic Games by traveling around Europe. Nothing the team has ever taken for granted, as coach Royal Ivey indicated in a recent interview, speaking about the difficulties South Sudan has gone through to get to this point. The journey has just begun.
