Unforgettable Seasons: The NBA Teams That Redefined Basketball History

Following cancellation by CBS and subsequent transfer to A&E, Poppy Montgomery-led procedural was discontinued by ABC before finding its new home with A&E.

Since Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Hakeem Olajuwonβ€˜s era, the NBA has undergone major transformations. From its physical roots in high-post play to one focusing more on shooting spaced out strategically with teamwork as its cornerstone, basketball has changed considerably over time.

1. The Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers introduced us all to β€œShowtime”, an exciting and effective style of basketball. From Magic Johnson’s no-look passes and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s unstoppable skyhooks, Showtime taught us that winning isn’t solely measured in results but also by how you achieve them.

The Lakers had another impressive season, compiling 53 wins to lead all NBA teams and reach back-to-back NBA Finals before being ousted by eventual champion Portland Trail Blazers in four straight.

The Lakers would rebound the following year and claim their inaugural championship under new owner Dr. Jerry Buss. With Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and Magic Johnson as key members of their lineup, the Lakers would win five championships during this decade; creating an ineffable brand of cool that later attracted superstars like Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

2. The Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics dominated the NBA during the late 1950s and 1960s, winning 16 championships under Bill Russell. His dynasty set an example for teamwork, tenacity, and rock-solid defense that thrilled audiences around the globe. Their legendary rivalries with Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers quickly captured fans nationwide.

The Celtics were an energetic, hard-working blue-collar team which resonated strongly with Boston’s working class population and won widespread support throughout their city. Their nickname and mascot, Sonny Liston the leprechaun, and Celtic green uniforms and parquet floors became iconic symbols of basketball and championship pride in Boston.

This Boston Celtics team boasted an outstanding roster, which included Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. After adding Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in 2007, this became one of the greatest and deepest teams ever seen in league history despite suffering multiple playoff defeats; yet still an elite unit with tremendous depth.

3. The Philadelphia 76ers

At one time during this season, the Philadelphia 76ers were one of the league’s premier teams. They held onto both their division lead and top-three seed in the Eastern Conference before faltering nearing play-off time.

However, they remained competitive thanks to Allen Iverson and led to an amazing 40-1 home record – the best mark ever seen in NBA history – as well as winning an Atlantic Division crown. Boasting healthy Dikembe Mutombo as well as an experienced supporting cast, these sixers proved difficult opponents.

Philadelphia would go on to beat both the New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks, then sweep all three Los Angeles Lakers series prior to winning its one and only championship of that season, featuring Iverson winning his first of three consecutive titles in that game.

4. The ABA

The American Basketball Association, or ABA, was an often-forgotten league that produced some of the greatest stars in NBA history. Though running its own basketball, exhibition games against NBA teams provided momentum towards merger talks between both leagues.

Julius Erving was perhaps the most notable ABA star player. Drafted out of University of Massachusetts by Virginia Squires, he became first player ever to have his jersey number retired by ABA teams and considered father of modern three point basketball three-point lines.

Semi-Pro is a film loosely based on the 1976 American Basketball Association/National Basketball Association merger. Four teams were eventually accepted as members of the new league; these included New York Nets, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets. ABA introduced many innovative rules which changed basketball forever such as 3-point shooting lines and making scoring points much simpler – these can now be found all over.
