LeBron James Opts Out Of $51.4M Contract, Open To Re-Signing For Under Max For Lakers To Use MLE

LeBron James has decided to opt out of his $51.4 million player option for the 24-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. James is expected to re-sign with the Lakers on a new contract. James will have the ability to receive a no-trade clause as part of his contract instead of signing an extension after opting in. James can sign for up to $160 million over three seasons.

Chris Haynes reports that James is open to taking less money to allow the Lakers to use the full midlevel exception. Depending on what they do with D’Angelo Russell after he decided to opt in to his $18.7 million contract, James would need to take approximately $12 million less than his max to allow the Lakers to use the MLE.

James will be a free agent for the sixth time in his career following 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

James appeared in 71 games last season, averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists and was an All-NBA Third Team selection for the third consecutive season.ย

James is represented by Rich Paul.ย
