Mavericks Trade Tim Hardaway Jr., Three 2nd Rounders To Pistons For Quentin Grimes

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to trade Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second round picks to the Detroit Pistons for Quinten Grimes. Detroit will take Hardaway into their cap space.

The Mavericks entered the offseason prioritizing a trade of Hardaway in order to offer a significant portion of their $12.9 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception to Derrick Jones Jr. Hardaway fell in and out of the Mavericks’ rotation at various times during his tenure with the team. Jones provided better two-way ability on the wing than Hardaway and was a key part of their Finals run.

The Mavericks re-signed Hardaway to a four-year, $72 million contract during his 2021 free agency as he was coming off a strong playoff run. Hardaway is entering the final season of his contract at $16.2 million, or 11.5 percent of the 24-25 salary cap. The Mavericks acquired Hardaway in 2019 from the New York Knicks as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade.

Grimes is on an expiring $4.3 million contract and was acquired by the Pistons from the New York Knicks at the deadline in the Bojan Bogdanovic trade. In 51 games across the Knicks and Pistons in 23-24, Grimes averaged 7.3 points, 2.0 reboudns and 1.3 assists in 20.1 minutes.
