The Buffalo Bills will try to bounce back from a surprising defeat when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football at Highmark Stadium. Last Sunday, Buffalo (4-3) lost 29-25 to a Patriots team that had dropped three in a row, scoring a combined 20 points over those three games. Entering Week 8, the Bills find themselves in second place in the AFC East standings, one game behind Miami. Tampa Bay (3-3) has lost three of its last four, including the last two. Despite the slump, the Buccaneers are just a half game behind division-leading Atlanta in the NFC South standings.
Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET. Buffalo is an 8.5-point favorite in the latest Bills vs. Buccaneers odds while the over/under for total points scored is 42.5. Why the Bills can cover
Buffalo has the pass rush to affect Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Bills have registered 25 sacks this season, which ranks second in the league behind only Baltimore (29). Eight Buffalo players have at least one sack, led by defensive end Leonard Floyd, who has 6.5.
In addition, Mayfield has cooled off considerably since his hot start to the season. The former No. 1 overall pick completed 69.1% of his passes with three touchdowns and zero interceptions and had a 104.4 passer rating over the first two games. In four games since then, he has completed 63.2% of his passes with five touchdowns and four interceptions and a 81.5 passer rating. See which team to pick here.
Why the Buccaneers can cover
Tampa Bay faces a Buffalo defense that has been ravaged by injuries at all three levels this season. Lineman DaQuan Jones (pectoral muscle), linebacker Matt Milano (leg) and cornerback Tre’Davious White (Achilles) are all likely out for the season. Without those three last Sunday, the defense allowed a struggling New England offense to set season-highs in points (29), yards per play (6.6) and passing yards per attempt (8.9).
In addition, the Buccaneers have done an excellent job of winning the turnover battle this season. The defense has a +7 turnover margin, which leads the league. Last week against the Falcons, Tampa Bay forced three turnovers. See which team to pick here.
