About a year and a half ago, the Philadelphia Eagles made what will go down as one of the best trades in franchise history. On the first day of the 2022 NFL Draft, Philadelphia sent the No. 18 overall pick in the first round to the Tennessee Titans, receiving star wide receiver A.J. Brown in return.
Apparently, the Titans did not want to meet Brown’s asking price on a contract extension ahead of his fourth NFL season. The Eagles, by contrast, quickly met the price and signed Brown to a four-year, $100 million pact.Β
Brown promptly had the best season of his career, reeling in 88 catches for 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns, and helping lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl berth. And head coach Nick Sirianni is forever thankful. He’s still so thankful, in fact, that he thanked owner Jeffrey Lurie last week.Β
“This week at practice, A.J. was having an unbelievable practice, and I went up to Mr. Lurie — and there’s no way I ever thought this would come out of my mouth — ‘Thanks for the $100 million to pay A.J. Brown. I really appreciate that.’ Like, a guy from Jamestown, New York? There’s no way I thought I’d ever say, ‘Thanks for the $100 million to pay A.J. Brown,'” Sirianni said in his press conference,Β via ProFootballTalk.
The $100 million certainly looks like money well spent. The Eagles are off to a 6-1 start and Brown is absolutely smoking defenders left and right, racking up five consecutive games with 125 receiving yards or more on his way to a 52-809-3 receiving line through just seven contests. If he keeps up anything close to this pace, he’ll likely put together the best season for an Eagles wide receiver in the team’s history.Β
