NBA Rumors: Celtics guard “not happy” following failed trade

Despite a disappointing end to the 2022–23 NBA season, the Boston Celtics have mostly had a successful offseason. Compare that to nearly one year ago, when they were forced to suspend former coach Ime Udoka just before the start of the season, and things are going even better.

Still, there appears to be at least one hiccup. Back in June, the Celtics nearly dealt guard Malcolm Brogdon to the LA Clippers in a three-team deal with the Washington Wizards, but the trade unraveled at the last minute.

That was due to Kristaps Porzingis’ contract guarantee deadline and the Clippers not having enough time to examine Brogdan to complete the deal. The Celtics still managed to acquire Porzingis in a 3-team deal with the Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies, but Brogdan is still a Celtic.

NBA Rumors: Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon”not happy” following failed trade.

According to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, there are still some hard feelings on Brogdan’s part after almost being moved.

“I was told he was not happy with how things went down. Now, does that increase his level of mistrust in the Celtics organization?” Washburn said.

At the very least, it would probably be awkward on both sides, but Washburn states that he is still upset about it.

After finally moving Marcus Smart, Boston has paired down their point guard rotation to Derrick White and Brogdan. But if his resentment lingers, perhaps the Celtics will be open to trading him later. Even then, it shouldn’t affect his play next season, though there is still some concern about the injury that resulted in him failing his physical with the Clippers.

Fortunately, Brogdan is expected to be ready to start the 2023–24 NBA season, and the Celtics have reason to believe that their off-season moves have made them a better team. If that is indeed the case, then may they have what it takes to win an NBA championship.
