The Golden State Warriors, who have been the model for consistency in recent years, appear to be in a state of flux. This comes after news that longtime G.M. Bob Meyers is leaving the team. Meyers helped build the Warriors into the team they are now, winning four championships as an executive in twelve seasons with the team.
He could be followed by a player that he drafted, Draymond Green, who could become a free agent this summer and leave after 11 seasons. Now rumors suggest that coach Steve Kerr could be among the next to leave.
The Spurs could steal Steve Kerr away from the Warriors
While Kerr is under contract for the next couple of seasons, this intel suggests that he could jump ship after his contract is up. Interestingly enough, it appears that he could be the next coach of the San Antonio Spurs. If true, he would replace his former coach, Gregg Popovich, who is expected to coach another season or two after the Spurs landed the number one pick.
Admittedly, the source isn’t as reputable as, say, Adrian Wojnarowski, Shams Charania, or Marc Stein, though there may be some truth to the rumor. Warriors star Steph Curry is 34, and Klay Thompson is 33. In a couple of seasons, both they and Golden State could be in a much different place, while the Spurs would potentially be ready to compete.
With Victor Wembanyama, a promising young core, and an eye-popping amount of picks, the Spurs job would be the best coaching gig in the NBA. Especially after having the same coach for almost 30 years. If Kerr were to leave Golden State, it might match up with Popovich’s retirement, and he would have his pick of coaching jobs, including San Antonio.
Overall, although Kerr leaving Golden State for San Antonio is just a rumor, it is definitely plausible. Even then, there is a lot of time between now and when Kerr’s contract is up in 2025. As a result, it may be something to keep an eye on but isn’t exactly imminent if true.
