NFL rumors: Broncos snipe Bears for top offensive lineman on monster deal

Mike McGlinchey is going to the Denver Broncos, and most definitely not to the Chicago Bears.

The Denver Broncos just got a whole lot more beefier with Mike McGlinchey joining their team.

When I think of line play in Denver, I think of Mark Schlereth soiling himself whilst fighting dudes in a phone booth. I also think of Garett Bolles thinking his infant son would remember him getting drafted because knowledge is so hard. But when you give up an arm and a leg for Matt Ryan’s less talented cousin, can I get a “Broncos Country, let’s ride!” out of Russell Wilson before I do lose it?

The Broncos have to be Rocky Mountain high to be giving McGlinchey five years and $87.5 million.

The idea of McGlinchey has always been better than the real thing, but at least the Chicago Bears got bucked by the Broncos to prevent this sort of homecoming for this Golden Domer legend, bro.

NFL rumors: Denver Broncos rip Mike McGlinchey out of Chicago Bears’ clutches

Look. The Broncos did their damnedest to outbid the Bears for McGlinchey’s services. Maybe they made a smart move by not forking over that absurd amount of cash for a right tackle? More importantly, what does it say that Kyle Shanahan would not give the cousin of the greatest quarterback he ever worked with a long-term extension? McGlinchey was overdrafted, but still!

Frankly, I think a change of scenery could be great for McGlinchey’s career. Like Schlereth, he could get even better as a professional playing a mile above sea level. He also goes from one offensive genius at head coach to another. Sean Payton taking over in Denver is massive for the Broncos’ chances of getting back to relevancy. Their division is brutal, but they should not be horrific again.

Ultimately, the Broncos are paying McGlinchey out the wazoo to be what the San Francisco 49ers thought he would be coming out of Notre Dame. What is slightly puzzling is the Bears had more money to spend than anyone, and even they were outbid by Denver for McGlinchey’s services. He may end up being a better fit there, but Chicago did need to add some more protection up front.

For now, Denver is dead-set on ending the second-longest postseason drought across the league.
